The Evolution of News: YouTube and Viral Videos
I used to look forward to reading the morning newspaper to find out what was happening in the world. Buried deep in the pages of my daily paper were not only the top news items of the day, but also many interesting stories. Those intriguing stories made my time with the newsprint enjoyable and added an extra dimension to my morning read.
Times have changed and it’s not the newspaper that captures my interest anymore, it’s instant viral videos that get my consideration now. From my emails to my Facebook page to the evening news, viral videos seem to follow me everywhere I go!
This is what people are talking about around the water cooler these days. In the Public Relations (PR) world, we have to take advantage of this.
- Is there an element of our story that could go viral?
- Is there a way we can position our story for video?
- Can we capture that special sound bite and get it out quickly?
That’s our new challenge, and technology is making it easier now that we can see how large of an audience we have captured.
When we used to get a story on the local TV news, we were never really sure how many people it would actually reach. Sure, there were the ratings, but they didn’t tell us exact numbers.
Now, thanks to YouTube and other video hosting services, we can see exactly how many people have seen our message.
Being able to accurately determine the reach of a story or message is extremely valuable. Not only does this help justify our PR efforts, but also the results are as plain as black and white.
